A professional Dutch critic (and poet) I admire, once wrote that ‘poetry is a matter of life and death’ (I think all art is). As a minor non-professional poet I translated that as ‘poetry should be handled seriously and with care’. Goes for poet and reader, I think. We can only do our best, don’t you think?
