You might not have noticed, but I often open my replies to the great pieces of Allan Ishac and Steven Rouach with ‘Over here in the small but cute Kingdom of the Oranges…’ That refers directly to the habitual first words of a chapter in the diary and in the letters of the Doctor to Homer. ‘Here in St Cloud’s’, wrote Doctor Larch….’in other parts of the world….’

I agree, it is his best novel, although Garp, Owen Meany and the relatively unknown but unforgettable A Son of the Circus come close. Could easily go on talking, but it is bedtime over here.
